A total of 310,619 Moroccans joined social security in Spain at the end of May, according to the Spanish Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Social Security.
Thus, Moroccans remain at the forefront of the ranking of foreign workers from outside the European Union who contribute to social security in Spain, followed by Colombians (112,349) and Venezuelans (111,683), according to ministry data published on Tuesday.
The total number of foreigners affiliated with Spanish social security was 2,426,625 people in the first five months of 2022, a 3% increase compared to April, or 72,111 more active people.
Of all foreign workers who contribute to Spanish social security, about 1,576,892 people come from non-EU countries and 849,733 from EU countries.
According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), around 879,943 Moroccans were legally incorporated in Spain as of January 1, 2022, an increase of 0.8% (+7,184 people) compared to January 1, 2021.
Thus the Moroccans maintained their position as the first foreign community legally settled in the Iberian country, representing 16% of the foreigners residing in Spain.
