In a brief statement this afternoon in front of 10 Downing Street, Boris Johnson noted the "clear" desire of the Conservatives to change the prime minister.

It is clear that it is the will of the Conservative Party to have a new leader and therefore a new prime minister, adding that the timetable for the election of a new Conservative leader will be set next week.

Until the appointment of the future leader of the party, Boris Johnson intends to remain prime minister and announces that he has formed a new government to replace ministers who resigned in recent days.

Several figures in his camp, as well as the Labor opposition, have called on him to leave Downing Street now.

Opposition leader Keir Starmer earlier responded to Johnson's departure as "good news".

The announcement comes as nearly 60 government departures, including five ministers, have been announced since Tuesday.

Discontent has been rising for months, fueled by the illegal parties scandal in Downing Street during the anti-Covid lockdown.

Johnson escaped a no-confidence vote last month, but 40% of Conservative MPs refused to give him their confidence.
